Emergency Supply Kit Week 2
We’re focusing on building our Emergency Supply Kits on budgeting using the 24-week preparedness calendar (pdf).
Instead of starting at the top of the list and following this calendar week-by-week, we’re:
- Highlighting some of this week’s best deals for items on the 24-week preparedness calendar (pdf), especially canned goods and water.
- Each week we’re adding a few items that are on sale at our favorite stores to our shopping list so we’ll soon have many of the items we need for our kits. When we purchase the items as they go on sale, we cross them off the 24-week preparedness calendar.
- Going through our current stock pile and crossing off the emergency supplies on the list that we currently have. Then we set those items aside for the kit.
The key point here is having a timeline – making progress on a regular basis. Otherwise, it’s just willy nilly and you could find yourself never getting to it. So we’re hoping these posts will help us keep this on our list as a priority.

Anne gathered the essentials for their 17-month old daughter from her stockpile:
- 1 box Alpha-bits
- 1 pack diapers
One size larger than her daughter’s current size. - 1 pack baby wipes
- 3 baby food pouches
Anne’s toddler is a little bit picky and an emergency isn’t necessarily the best time to improve eating habits. - 1 thermometer
This was probably was a baby shower gift that was still lying around. - 1 Infant Advil
- 1 jeans, 1 t-shirt, and a pair of shoes
All were purchased on clearance/sale and are in larger sizes than her toddler’s current size. - 1 spare lovey
If you’re looking for an awesome baby shower gift, this lovey is part of Angel Dear’s Pair and a Spare series. No need to worry about losing or washing a blankie because there are 2 spare! - 1 pacifier
If she hasn’t given up the pacifier by an emergency, it won’t be a good time to wean her of it!
Have you been building your emergency kit?
Mandy says
When you are collecting these things for the emergency kit, do you multiply the items by the number of family members. So, this is just a one person kit? Thanks!
Anne says
Definitely with the water you need to multiply it by the number of people in your family. With the canned goods, I plan to check the serving sizes and calculate how many I need based on that. We are aiming for at least three days worth of food and water. Hope that helps!
Isa Aviad says
The minimum amount of water suggested per person / per day (including animals) is one gallon. This is to cover drinking, cooking, and washing up. Do not store water in any container that has contained sugar (orange juice, etc.) because no matter how well you think you have cleaned them, you could end up with bacteria in your stored water and do not store plastic water bottles directly on a concrete floor.

I’ve never heard of the pair and a spare lovies, what a great idea!
Anne says
We are so lucky our daughter chose one of these as her security blanket. Both my husband and I had handmade blankies as children. I remember how devastating it was when my mom washed it! 🙂
These sets are kind of pricey so maybe we’ll see a price drop some time!
