FREE Summer Reading Programs

There are quite a few FREE summer reading programs that reward kids for reading during the summer. Kids can earn everything from free books to food to game tokens!

Please leave a comment on this post if we’re missing a FREE summer reading program and we’ll add it!

Barnes & Noble’s Imagination Destination: Read any eight (8) books and record them in a Reading Journal (PDF). Bring the completed journal into your local Barnes & Noble store between May 19 and September 7, 2015. Kids who complete the reading program can select a FREE book from a list of 20 titles. This program is designed for kids in first through sixth grades.

Chuck E Cheese: Print off their Reading Rewards Form and keep track of your reading progress over two weeks by marking off days completed with a sticker or check mark. Bring in a completed form for 10 FREE game tokens. Offer is valid through 12/31/15 only at participating locations, so you may want to call ahead and check. Food purchase is required. Limit one certificate per kid per day.

Half Price Books: Read 15 minutes per day during the months of June and July, there’s a printable log to make keeping track easy and a Reading Reward certificate. For every 300 minutes read, children can turn in their completed log to their local store and earn Bookworm Books. One top reader per age group each month will also receive a $20 Half Price Books gift certificate.

Pizza Hut Book it! Program: Spark your Greatness Summer Reading Challenge launches June 22. There will be printable lists of games, reminders and activities, an Instagram scavenger hunt and chances to win prizes by participating. You can register online here.

Scholastic Summer Challenge: This summer challenge unites students around the globe in an attempt to set a new world record for most minutes read. You can download summer reading booklists based on your child’s age group and keep track of minutes read online.

Sylvan Learning’s Book Adventure program: Register online and search for books your child has read, then complete quizzes about the book. There are 5 – 10 questions per book and once completed with correct answers, kids will earn points that can be traded for prizes. In the past these have included temporary tattoos, candy, magazines and books.

Don’t forget to check with your local library for programs! Most libraries offer a variety of activities and events. Locally, our public library offers a summer reading program that rewards kids with a free book and a ticket to the county fair in exchange for logging a set number of hours.

Are your kids doing a summer reading program? We’d love to hear about your favorite reading program or ways you keep your kids reading during the summer!
