This is the Albertsons DOUBLER flier that is in today’s paper (8/29/10). The doublers themselves are enough to get excited about, make sure and check out my list of free-bees and great deals with doublers this week.

BUT, I also want to point out the coupon in the top right corner of this flier – it’s a manufacturer coupon for $3 off when you buy any 5 participating Quaker products (the same one that is in this week’s Albertsons ad). If you aren’t going to use this coupon at Albertsons this week – hold on to it. It’s a manufacturer coupon, which means you can redeem it anywhere and it doesn’t expire until 10/17/10!! You better believe we are going to be seeing other stores offering great Quaker sales this fall and this coupon could be the missing piece to getting you super cheap Quaker products. Safeway’s coupon policy specifically states that they’ll take manufacturer’s coupons with another store’s logo on them.

8. Safeway will accept valid manufacturer coupon that displays another retailer’s logo or name only if such coupon is for a specific item.

Deals for the week of August 25 through August 31. Nothing too super exciting, I think I might stop by to pick up some cheap olive oil, which we just ran out of. Other good deals are the Starbucks 4-pack frappuccinos for only $2.99 this weekend (if you have Starbucks coupon booklet).

I had a baby two weeks ago, so I was thrilled when Safeway asked me to review their grocery home delivery program! I have never used a grocery delivery service before, but what a perfect time to try it out.  Instead of hauling the baby to the store, my groceries came to me – I could get used to this!

I purchased toilet paper, meat and produce – all staples that we can use in the house. Because you can’t use paper coupons when you place an online order, I wanted to order items that I don’t generally have coupons for, such as meat and produce.

Here are my thoughts on the Safeway’s grocery home delivery service. . .

Things I loved. . .

• Convenience, convenience, convenience! I placed my order online in the late afternoon on Friday and my order was delivered mid-day Saturday. The delivery man carried my groceries into the house for me.
• Produce was in great shape – I was impressed by the quality of the produce I ordered. I bought organic bananas, avocados, corn and green beans – all were in top condition.
• Online sales offer decent savings – Although I noticed the online prices were generally higher than when you shop in-store, I was still able to take advantage of some great sales. The meat I purchased was on sale buy one, get one FREE – which saved me $16! The toilet paper was part of a promotion for spend $25, save $10.
• E-coupons still apply – You can’t use paper coupons, but you can use e-coupons on your order. Load coupons from Safeway.com, Shortcuts.com, Cellfire.com and P&G e-Saver before placing your order. Unfortunately your e-coupons are not applied to your total until your order is delivered. So you don’t know if they are going to come off until you see your receipt at the time of delivery. But I was thrilled to see a $3 P&G e-saver coupon come off my account!
• Great customer service – My driver was super friendly. As I mentioned, he hauled in my groceries and then went over my receipt with me, so I understood all the options.

Things to consider. . .

• Exact delivery time unknown - When you place your order you can select a 2-hr or a 4-hr window to have your groceries delivered. The 2-hr option is more expensive, but because I had a coupon for FREE delivery, I opted for that. My order was supposed to arrive between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday – he pulled up right at noon or a few minutes after. Would have liked an earlier delivery time, or a phone call saying the driver would be there near the end of the window.
• Meat was marked sell by same date – I was disappointed to see that the two extreme value packs of hamburger that I bought were dated the same day of my delivery. This meant that I needed to use or freezer wrap the meat, the same day, which was a little annoying. From what I have seen from other reviews of this service, this is not necessarily the norm.
• Total cost unknown until delivery – When you place your order they give you an estimate of what your order will be. This is because they don’t know the values to deduct for items that are buy one, get one free or they won’t have the final price/weight of the produce. My estimate was $67. but I actually only ended up paying about $37. When you are looking at the total, you can take into account that produce prices vary, any BOGO sales and e-coupons won’t be deducted until items are packed up, and your e-coupons won’t be included until the end – so your total at the door will most often be less than the initial estimate!
• Costs are higher – Most of the prices are higher than you’d find in the store, but other prices were pretty comparable. For  example, with the BOGO sale, my hamburger ended up being $2.25 a pound (for 15% fat variety), the avocados were $1.25 each, the green beans were $1.49/lb – so not exactly super sale prices, but decent prices considering they were delivered to my door!

I had a question about the pricing on the toilet paper and customer service addressed my issue – so I was a happy camper.

Overall I would definitely recommend this service, I can see it being particularly useful when:

• You’ve just had surgery (or a baby) and making it to the store isn’t possible or easy (great gift idea if you know someone in this situation!)
• You and your family are on vacation somewhere, staying some place with a kitchen. You can have it delivered to your hotel or condo – you’ll save money by not eating out and you won’t need to rent a vehicle or make a trip to the local grocery store
• You’d like to make your life easier! So maybe you scrimp and save with coupons on most trips to the store. I can see how this can be a special treat for yourself – once a month or once a quarter. Just like paying someone for the convenience of cleaning your house every once in a while – it can be a way to treat yourself for all the hard work you put into saving! It’s definitely cheaper than eating out and if you buy the items on sale and with e-coupons, you’ll still be getting decent prices.

Then I went on over to QFC to see if they had restocked their Kraft shredded cheese – and they had! Make sure and check out my earlier post about getting the Kraft shredded cheese for only $0.39 cents a bag – no coupons required!

I also spotted a great Manager Markdown in the specialty cheese section!

I found Rondele spreadable cheese tubs on markdown for $0.99 cents each. They are dated for a late October sell-by date, so I’m not sure why they were marked down, but I had $1 coupons from a tear pad from Fred Meyer and a loose coupon that I found at Safeway (near their specialty cheese department) – these coupons made the spreadable cheese FREE!

PLUS, two of them have special promotional codes that I can register online to print off $10 in coupons! So I ended up with FREE spreadable cheese and I’ll be printing coupons for:

• Save $2 on any (1) President Feta cheese
• Save $2 on any (1) new President Brie (6 oz log shape)
• Save $2 on any (1) new President Brie (6 oz log shape)
• Save $2 on any (1) President Brie cheese
• Save $2 on any (1) rondele by President Gourmet Spreadable cheese

These coupons will come in handy the next time I find it marked down! This kind of “unadvertised” deal is why it’s a good idea to have some kind of coupon binder or folder for carrying coupons, just in case. It’s a fine balance between carrying every single coupon you have to the store and just having a good variety – just in case you happen along a good deal.

There are often times I see a good deal and I know I have a coupon for it at home! Those times are frustrating, but you also have to consider that you can’t have every coupon with you all the time – it would be exhausting to keep up with and impossible to lug around.

I found So Delicious Vanilla or Original coconut milk on sale for $2.99 with $1 peelies right on the caps – making them only $1.99 per half gallon. I don’t buy this product, but I think this is a pretty good price isn’t it?  There is also a $1 printable coupon available (requires registration), in case you can’t find the peelie coupons when you get to the store.

Found this awesome tearpad display that has a coupon for a “FREE Tropicana Pure Premium Orange Juice (up to $3.99), when you buy any three (3) Quaker cold cereals” Expires Aug. 31, 2010. I believe some of the Quaker cereals are $2.50 right now. . . so it’s not really a good time to use this coupon, unless you’re going to be buying the cereal anyway. I’m going to wait until the cereal goes on sale and I’m going to combine this tearpad coupon with the $1/1 Quaker cereal coupons I told you about a couple weeks ago.

I found peelie coupons for $0.55/1 Dr. Pepper 2-liters. The 2-liters are $1.25 when you buy four, so if you bought four and used four peelies you’d be paying only $0.70 cents each. We aren’t Dr. Pepper drinkers but this peelie made me think about buying it anyway!

I found a blinkie machine with $1/1 coupons for Lea & Perrin’s Worcestershire sauce in front of the product. Combine this coupon with the $0.50 cent Safeway coupon that is in the Safeway Grilling coupon book and you’ll get $1.50 off the product. It’s on sale for $3.35 this week, so after coupons would be $1.85.

As a side note, while at the store, I had four different strangers ask me when I was due and/or how I was feeling, which is a first for me! Normally people don’t say anything. I must look like I’m going to pop (I certainly feel that way) with my due date only 12 days away.

I’m working on grocery deals for this next week, but came across a scenario I just had to post! Get Classico pasta sauce for only $0.75 cents each at Safeway!

First of all, to understand the deal, you should know that based on Safeway’s coupon policy:

• You can use BOTH a Safeway coupon AND a manufacturer coupon on any product.
• You can use a manufacturer coupon with another store logo on them

So here’s the deal:
Buy two Classico pasta sauces using the Safeway store coupon (from Safeway ad) for $1.49 each
Also use the Albertsons manufacturer coupon (from Albertsons ad) to save $1.50/2 Classico pasta sauce
Final price = $1.49 for two. . .or $0.75 cents each!

The Safeway coupon does require a $10 minimum purchase – this is usually before coupons come off, because coupons are considered a form of payment.

It’s always a good idea to have the Safeway coupon policy printed out, just in case the cashier isn’t aware of the most recent changes.

This is a GREAT price on this brand of pasta sauce. This is a great product to buy for your stockpile because it stores for a while and it’s so versatile! You can use it for spaghetti, pizza sauce, Chicken parmigiana, etc.

The deals don’t get much easier than this. Safeway has Ronzoni pasta for $1 a box. In front of the pasta is a Smart Source blinkie machine with $0.50/1 coupons! Use the $0.50 cent coupons to get your pasta for only $0.50 cents each! You can use one blinkie for every box of pasta you buy. I think this is a stock up price for pasta. There are no limits on the pasta this week, but it’s always nice not to clear the shelves.

If you get to your store and the shelves are empty or you don’t see the variety of pasta you like, grab a couple blinkie coupons and get a raincheck for the variety of pasta you want. A raincheck is essentially an IOU from the store for the product at the advertised price for when it comes into stock. You generally have 30-90 days to use a raincheck before it expires. You can use coupons with your raincheck. You get the raincheck at customer service or from your cashier when you check out.
