Today’s chicken coop is from the Angela and her family in Hillsboro, Oregon (a suburb of Portland). They have five chickens and they get about five eggs a day – even through the winter, thanks to a heat lamp in the coop.
The basic coop structure was purchased from Coastal Farms for about $180 and they assembled it themselves. For about another $100 they built an enclosed yard area for the chickens to roam. Angela’s father helped with some of the construction and he jokes, “Can’t I just buy you a dozen eggs?” every time they spend money on the chickens.

Here’s more of what Angela shared in her email:
“My honey is from Cuba, so for him it’s about raising your own animals and growing your own crops. If we didn’t live in suburbia, he would love to raise ducks, rabbits, doves, horses, cows, goats, etc.
We made sure to get a Rhode Island Red chicken because my 95-year-old grandpa told me, “You haven’t lived until you’ve spent time with Rhode Island Reds.” He claimed they act like cats or dogs and rub up against you looking for attention. Speaking from my own experience, our Red is the feistiest of our flock. But she reminds me of Grandpa!
Chickens are a big investment and quite a bit of work, but very fun! And the eggs are great!!”

It’s a cat in the coop!
Thanks for sending in your coop photos Angela! Although the initial investment in chickens is more than a dozen of eggs (or many, many dozens of eggs), there is something to be said for having farm-fresh eggs and enjoying them as part of the family.
