Rise and Shine 11/8 – NEW Facebook group, Last day for GWL giveaway

Good morning!

I created a new Facebook Group yesterday specifically for Christmas deals and ideas. It’s different than a “page” and you can set it up to notify you when someone posts. This can be either a.) obnoxious or b.) helpful depending on what you’re looking for. My goal was to post lightning Amazon deals and other very timely offers that might get lost in the abyss of updates that is your Facebook newsfeed. The good news – the Facebook Group is completely voluntary, you can change your notifications at anytime or leave at anytime if it’s not a good fit! Head over to the Christmas deals and ideas and check it out, or not.

Tonight is the night I’ll pick the winner for the Great Wolf Lodge giveaway. Nearly 3,000 entries – yowza. I wish I could give you each a stay. Contest closes at  8 p.m. PST and I’ll try to get the winner’s information up on the blog as soon after that as I can!

I’m also giving away three (3) $50 Visa gift cards and a $25 Grocery Outlet gift card. Both are very easy entries – just leave a comment on the post.

If 30 pounds is too much, split the box with a friend or neighbor.

I posted yesterday about freezing peppers. If anything I think the photos are fun to look at.

Zaycon Bacon and Ham still available in some areas

This is your reminder that this is still available!

Do you want to bring home the bacon? Good bacon? You can get good quality bacon for only $3.29 a pound from Zaycon Foods! They just opened up bacon (and ham) sales in the Northwest!

I have personally ordered bacon before (last December) and it was worth every penny. It does come in a 30 pound box for $98.70, but I just freezer packed mine into one – to two-pound packages and we used it for meals for close to 8 months. It’s a really good quality bacon, not like the Farmland stuff you buy at the grocery store for $3.50 per 12 oz, or whatever it is. When we ran out, I only bought bacon if I absolutely needed it for a recipe, otherwise we did without – so my darling husband and kids will be excited to get some bacon again!

From the Zaycon website –

This bacon has had the same award winning cure since 1959, cured for a minimum of 24 hours, and hickory smoked for at least 7.5 hours, the smoking process includes only actual hardwood chips burned in the stocker, this creates the color and flavor that makes this cure so special, in addition to color and taste our bacon has been carefully hand trimmed from each belly for consistent sizing.

They are also selling Carve Master Boneless Smoked Ham: Moist & Tender Naturally Applewood Smoked Ham for $3.29/lb and that comes in a 20 pound package for $65.80. I’ve never ordered their ham before – but I have been so happy with the chicken, beef and bacon that I would bet the ham is top notch, too.

It is weird buying meat off a truck. I’ll be the first to admit it, but I’ve been a happy customer for nearly 2 years now and know I’ve heard a lot of good feedback from readers. Good Morning America featured them last week!

I recommend registering with Zaycon Foods if you haven’t done so yet. It’s FREE to create an account and you can see all the upcoming events and sales. I’ve been a Zaycon customer now for more than a year – and I have always had the best experiences. You can read my original Zaycon review here – the chicken is awesome and I ordered bacon last time, too, and it did not disappoint!  Also read my post on how to prepare for your Zaycon chicken here.

If you have ordered from Zaycon before – leave a comment to others can hear first hand what to expect!

Join the Queen Bee Facebook Christmas Deal Group (exclusive giveaway today!)

Facebook has made some recent updates that has changed what posts you might see in your Facebook News Feed. From the data I can see from the Queen Bee Facebook page about 5% of the 20,000 of the people who “like me” on Facebook actually see my updates. I really don’t want to overtake your Facebook wall, but if you want to be notified when there is a great Amazon deal (before it’s gone), then it’s frustrating because Facebook decides what is worthy for your news feed and what is not. I could pay to promote my posts (so they show up), but I’m not made of money and if I was, I certainly wouldn’t be giving it to Facebook.

There are some things you can do to help Facebook make a more educated guess about what you want to see, and what you don’t. You can read this article by Blogging with Amy, where she explains what you can do to avoid missing Facebook updates. But at the end of the day – you need to be watching your main wall stream 24/7 if you really don’t want to miss a thing and who has time for that?

So I’ve created a Facebook Group for Christmas and Black Friday deals. We’ll do a test run through Christmas and see how it works for everyone. By joining a Group you are part of a community – just like my Queen Bee Facebook page but a bit more intimate. You can opt to be emailed when a new deal is posted OR you can opt to only check it when you login to Facebook. The great thing is —> you get to choose how you are notified when you are a member of a group!

I imagine I’ll post a lot of online sales in the group, things like Amazon, Kohl’s, REI and my favorite online retailers. Often times I’ll find deals, but just don’t have time to do a full post, so I’ll likely link directly to the deal.

We are going to try this group out for at least a few weeks and see how it helps us build community and connect with you. If you have questions or comments about it – please don’t be shy to speak up! It will be an encouraging community, family-friendly, uplifting and sensible – just like I run the Queen Bee Facebook page and Queen Bee blog.

I’m giving away a $20 Amazon gift card over in the group today – so go join the group and enter the giveaway.

How to freeze peppers (yes, you can!)

Bell peppers are one of those things that seem to be either a super great deal ($0.50 cents or less) or NOT at all (as much as $3!). I stock up when I find them for $0.50 cents or less and then freeze them for future use, so I don’t get stuck paying full price when I want fajitas!

Let me just start by saying that I don’t think you can freeze a pepper and have it come out with exactly that same crunch (and flavor) as you’d find from a fresh one. At least not that I can figure out. But they will be great for stir fry, omelets, fajitas and any cooked application. Besides the flavor of frugality can’t be forgotten!

Some people will BLANCH the peppers and then submerge in ice cold water before freezing. This supposedly kills an enzyme that might break down the peppers in the freezer. I went for simple and just froze them without blanching. You can try both styles and see which you prefer.

Here’s what I did:

1. Start by gathering your peppers, a large cutting board, sharp knife, Ziploc (or freezer) bags and a large bowl (for garbage/compost)

2. Peel off any produce stickers. Rinse peppers and dry well. Any extra moisture on them will only create extra ice on the peppers when you freeze them.

3. Slice in half. Using your hands scoop out all the seeds inside and dump into your garbage/compost bowl.

4. I like to slice mine into strips because we will most likely use ours for fajitas. These can also be thawed and quickly chopped for a frittata or omelet.

5. I diced a bunch of the peppers into smaller pieces, for when I make eggs or omelets – I like quick options! Freeze in portions that you’ll think you’ll use. These pictured above are in quart bags.

6. Place peppers into Ziploc (or freezer bags) and remove all possible air. An easy way to do this is leave the Ziploc bag open and fold the top half of the bag over the bottom part and push down on the table. It will squeeze air out and keep it out until you seal the top. Works best when bag is about half full.

7. I like to spread my peppers out into a flat layer, so the bags will freeze flat and will stack easily. I would recommend using with 3 months. I usually lay them in a box, inside the freezer until they are frozen, then I stand them up on their sides, so I can easily find them.

Tell me – Do you freeze peppers?

I’d love to hear your tips for freezing peppers or other vegetables or fruits!
