Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy.
Good morning! How is it going today?
Yesterday I shared a recipe for Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp! Originally posted in late April 2013 the recipe is perfect if you’re harvesting rhubarb from your yard or you can pick some up at a local Farmer’s market. You may also be able to find frozen rhubarb at your local grocery store.
Thanks to a good friend we picked up a 44 pound box of organic Bartlett pears yesterday for just $25. AMAZING deal. And they are delicious. Tonight we plan to make pear sorbet with the kids and I’m looking for pear recipes – thinking a batch of pear sauce (like apple sauce) might be in order. And I need to pick up some blue cheese – because a pear, blue cheese and candied nut salad sounds like a good dinner idea, don’t you think? What are your favorite pear recipes? Remember I haven’t master canning yet (boo-hoo), so I’m looking for pear recipes that are relatively healthy and preserve the pears. Can you freeze pears?
Did you see all the new grocery deals that rolled out yesterday? QFC sure is impressive with it’s Buy 4, Save $4 sale. If you live near a Kroger-affiliate store, you should have similar deals. The promo is set to run for two weeks!! We’ll add more deals as we find them.

Not necessarily a deal, but ZooTunes released their summer schedule! Held at Woodland Park Zoo, these are incredibly family-friendly concerts (depending on the artist playing). We try to make at least one a year. This photo was from last year – we always try to go to the zoo beforehand. You sit out on a lawn, pack your meal (or buy one there) and soak in the Northwest sun with some funky tunes. 🙂 Tickets go on sale tomorrow – one child (age 12 and under) get in free with each paid ticket. Admission to the zoo is no included. Read my post about ZooTunes last year.

Pear sauce…Yum!! If you have a dehydrator you can use that pear sauce to make fruit leather, or simply dried pear slices. Very easy and a great snack.
Heather Clarke says
Judith – That’s a fantastic idea. My family loves fruit leather. I’m going to try this over the weekend. 🙂 Thanks for the idea!
Angela says
Yes, you can freeze pears. Pear sauce is great to freeze too. It’s a little runnier than applesauce, but it works really great in recipes if you want to sub applesauce for the oil. I made some apple/pear sauce one year and it was so good! I’ve also made pear pies or apple/pear pies. You can make it and freeze the filling. Line a pie pan with plastic wrap, fill the pan and freeze. When it’s completely frozen, pop it out, and put it in a Ziploc bag or FoodSaver and store. It will last up a year. I”m sure they would work well with your food dehydrator as well.
Angela says
Oh, yeah. When you’re ready to make the pie, make the crust as per norm, then put the frozen filling in, top with more crust and bake. You might need to bake it about 10 mins more than a fresh one. I”m going to try one this summer with peaches.
