Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy. I share with you what’s happening with me – and I LOVE to hear about what’s happening with you.
Good morning! Well I have a little secret – we just got back from an EIGHT day road trip, driving 1,700 miles to see family in Eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana. I have so much to tell you. We had so many fun experiences – like “camping” at Glacier National Park (we saw a bear!) and checking out some landmarks. We did many frugal and FREE things along the way that I want to tell you all about. But it’s going to take some time for me to process it all, edit my photos and get them put together so they make sense. We are grateful to be home and have loads of laundry and an empty fridge. If the blog seemed a little random and sporadic this past week it was because I would be feverishly blogging whenever we had cell service (not often in Montana!). I always appreciate that you stick with me, even when I’m a little all over the place (figuratively and literally). 🙂 This was our last hurrah for the summer – my husband is a school teacher and football coach, and he starts practice this next week and school soon. Then back to the school year routine.
Driving over from Eastern Washington yesterday we stopped at Thorp Fruit and Antique Mall and I bought a 25 pound box of local peaches for $10.70 – comes out to $0.43 a pound! Great price. I gave some to our neighbor who watched our chickens, but I need to figure out what to do with the rest today. I got lots of suggestions on Facebook – many of you suggested canning, but I’m scared to try it. Ridiculous, I know. We will see what I figure out and I’ll keep you posted!
We will have new grocery ads up later today. QFC is ready and will be posted shortly after Rise and Shine this morning! Today is the last day of the Buy 5, Save $5 promo at QFC.
Sunday I posted a major round-up of the best school supply deals this week. I added ShopKo and Dollar Tree as they both seem to have good deals this week. What stores are you finding have the best Back to School bargains?

Well, if it makes you feel better, I didn’t notice anything to suggest you we’re gone! You have a great team of people to help out! Hope you had a great time and here’s a laundry tip that I got from a friend a long time ago: always do one load of laundry a day. It will never pile up, and it’s easier than trying trying to squeeze 5 loads in one day!
Anne says
I do this, too. I actually wash a load after dinner and hang up anything that needs to air dry that evening before I go to bed. In the morning, I pop the rest of the load into the dryer so I can fold it and put it away within an hour or so of waking. It feels great to get it checked off the list so early in the morning and with a baby, there is always a load to be done!
If I had piles of laundry after a trip, though, I’d do at least two loads a day or it would drive me crazy!
Heather Clarke says
Thankfully my husband is the laundry master in our house. It’s already almost done and he plans to fold it later this morning. Grateful for such a helpful hubby – he generally does a load a day and then folds it every few days. Seems to work!
What are you favorite stain busters? We have some mustard stains from our trip that will NOT come out!
Anne says
My husband does all the dishes! We are lucky!
He got yellow mustard on a light blue polo shirt a few weeks ago. I used Shout Advanced and liquid Tide on it. I buy cheaper sensitive skin detergent (with coupons!) generally but keep a little Tide on hand for bad stains. I had to treat it and wash it 3-4 times (didn’t dry it each time) before I could get it out.
I’d love to hear if anyone else has a better solution for yellow mustard. My husband loves it.
Angela says
Mustard is a hard one. Generally, I treat it with Shout, wash, and don’t dry it. Repeat if necessary. I hear dish soap is good for greasy stains….it might work with mustard? I don’t know…Google is my best friend! 🙂
Jane says
For real tough stains, I soak the clothes in the washing machine overnight in Oxy Clean powder. Sometimes I pretreat with a spray on stain remover. I start the washer in the morning and typically all stains are gone. I have also heard from a stain removing expert that Tide powder works similar. Oxy Clean is on sale at Costco right now $4.00 off with a limit of 4.
Heather Clarke says
Thank you Jane! I actually picked up some Oxi Clean yesterday at Costco and we’re soaking the stains right now. Hoping they come out!

I have a suggestion for your peaches – that doesn’t include canning!!! I don’t can, don’t know how to do it & never got the courage to try & learn. This is what I do when I have an overload of peaches:
Filling in a Flash (from Midwest Living)
1/2 – 3/4 cup sugar
3 Tbsp flour
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Dash ground nutmeg
6 cups thinly sliced, peeled fresh peaches
2 tsp lemon juice
In a large bowl, stir together sugar, flour, cinnamon & nutmeg. Add peaches & lemon juice. Gently toss till peaches are coated.
Line a 9″ pie plate with foil. Spoon filling into the foil lined pie plate. Cover & freeze until firm, about 6 hours.
Pop filling with foil out of pie plate & place into a large freezer bag; seal. Return to freezer. Makes enough for one pie (8 servings).
To use: pop the filling into a prepared pie crust, using the same size pie pan as the filling was made in. Remove the foil from frozen filling; place filling into crust. Dot with 2 tbsp butter, cut up.
Top with remaining pie crust, cutting slits to let steam escape. Cover edge with foil to prevent over browning & bake in 375 degree oven for 45 minutes. Remove foil from edge & bake 30 minutes more or until crust is golden brown & juice begins to bubble. Cool on wire rack.
I have made a huge amount of this filling as well & put it into a large 9×13″ pan. I’m not a fan of pie crust, so I prefer crisps. I can make a big peach crisp by just taking the frozen filling out, removing the foil & popping it back into the pan that I made the filling in. Then just top it with this mixture: 1/2 cup quick cooking rolled oats, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 1/2 tsp cinnamon & dash of salt. Bake at 375 degrees for 50 minutes or until filling is tests done with a fork.
