Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy. Published Monday through Friday – as I’m able.
Good morning! How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?
We have all sorts of exciting things happening around here this week. We are busy going through the Black Friday ads to find the best deals, offered online, so that we can save you time and money (and stress next week). We compiled a round-up of turkey, ham and prime rib prices at our local stores so you could pick the best deal for you.
I bought a turkey yesterday at QFC – for $0.69/lb it cost under $9! Turkey is such an affordable meat this time of year. I know some stores, like Fred Meyer, run a promotion for a FREE turkey when spend $150. People LOVE this promotion – but remember, it’s only a deal if you need the $150 in groceries. Don’t spend an extra $100 to save $10-15, you know?
Yesterday I went to QFC and stocked up on canned tomatoes, canned vegetables, Campbell’s cooking soups and chicken broth. This sale is my favorite of the year! I love it because the prices are amazing without coupons, there are no limits (like a lot of stores do when they offer canned veggies so cheap) and the products on sale are core ingredients in a lot of my favorite slow cooker meals! This sale only lasts until tomorrow (Tuesday), so get into your local QFC and check it out! Check out my shopping trip here.
I also brought the kids to Goodwill yesterday. We hadn’t been in bit and we found some fun deals. We found some of the bag-of-toys marked down 50% off ($3.50 – $4) and one bag was even $1.99 thanks to the tag sales. These bags can be very hit-or-miss, but if you look carefully before you buy, and you find them marked down, you can find some real deals!
For about $10 here is what we found in our grab bags:
- Entire set of Frozen character figurines (with clothes!)
- Imaginext hero people
- Two working Zhu Zhu hamsters with armor shields
- A full construction set – with mini trucks, cones and signs
- Little people toys, books and cars (sending to my 1-yr-old nephew!)
- Wooden memory/matching game
- Hot Wheels
- This Plan Toys My First Camera – so cool!
- Plus more
I’m super picky – I go through them before the kids get to play with the items – and throw out anything that isn’t appropriate, is broken or is just junk (like Happy Meal toys). I also wipe down toys with Clorox wipes and we wash anything that is plush. The kids had lots of fun playing with these items yesterday!
I also found this CowboyStudio 30-Inch Photo Soft Box Light – 4 Chroma Key Backdrops for $3.99! I’ve been wanting one for my food photography, but didn’t want to pay $30+ for it! And I found a camera tripod for $1.99, some cute clothes for my kids and some great books. 🙂 Did you find any secondhand deals this last weekend?
Last Friday I shared my favorite cheeses for a holiday cheese board, including a recipe for Baked Brie with apricot preserves (so good!). I’m partnering with Albertsons to give away a cheese basket (valued at around $100) and a $50 Albertsons gift card – if you send in a photo of your favorite cheese board. You can read more details here. And although it requires a little bit of extra effort than most giveaways – your odds are much better because we won’t see as many entries. 🙂 I wouldn’t spend a lot – just make a simple cheese board with your favorite cheeses and send me a pic!

I got a quarter collecting book the other day for $0.90 and found that it had over $6 in quarters in it already. 🙂
Heather Clarke says
Megan – THAT IS AWESOME!!? Seriously – who donates a quarter book with money in it? Score!
Mea says
I love those bags of toys at Goodwill!! My son found a bag one time that had 100% Hot wheels cars. I put them in my colander on the top rack of my dishwasher and ran them with a cycle of dishes. We called it the car wash 😉
You had a great find on yours!! Goodwill is awesome. Do you know if they have raised their $1.29 2 day sales to $1.99?
Heather Clarke says
Mea – They did raise their $1.29 sale to $1.99. Just noticed that today – I hadn’t been on a Sunday in awhile! 🙁 Still found some good deals, though. That’s amazing to find a whole bag of Hot Wheels – that must have been a ton! Thanks for taking the time to comment. 🙂
