Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy. Published Monday through Friday – as I’m able.
Good morning! How are you doing today? I’m glad it’s Friday! Yesterday was a glorious day – sunshine, sunshine, sunshine and warm temps – making my daughter’s pumpkin patch field trip EVEN more fun. She picked out the perfect pumpkin and was all smiles, all morning. We’ve gone to Schilter’s Family Farm every year since my kids were born – and I adore it! Back in my freelance writing days, I wrote this article for the Washington Farm Bureau, Schilter’s Family Farm: Cultivating pumpkins, Christmas trees and family traditions (PDF). They truly are a family-run business and Jeff and his wife were leading our field trip yesterday. A petting zoo, a hay maze, a hay ride (plus lots more on the weekends) – this place has a lot to offer!
We picked up some BEAUTIFUL pumpkins for our front porch yesterday – at $0.29/lb they are slightly more than the cheapest price I’ve seen (WinCo $0.18/lb) – but it’s going right in the pockets of a local family – and really, on a 15-lb pumpkin that’s just $1.65 more – plus you get the experience of their beautiful farm and family helping you! As frugal as I am, I actually ENJOY paying more for things like this – it really does make a difference, I believe. Do you have a favorite family-run pumpkin patch?
Last night we made homemade pizza for dinner, using refrigerated pizza dough from Trader Joe’s! Although I love making my grandma’s homemade pizza dough recipe, the refrigerated pizza dough from Trader joe’s is $1.29 – $1.50 and it is incredibly easy on busy days. Between the field trip, taking the car into the shop (check engine light again!), picking up our Zaycon bacon and blogging – it was a busy day and I was able to pull dinner together in less than 20 minutes (Rachael Ray would have been proud).

For folks in north King County or Snohomish County, we really enjoy Craven Farms in Snohomish. It is a family-run farm, too, and admission to the farm is free. We’ve been going for years, even before we had kids!
