Things seem to be picking up in the garden. A weeklong forecast of sun will certainly help things along. We harvested a head of green lettuce, a ton of rainbow chard, cilantro, dill and continued to graze on the sugar snap peas.
This week the fava bean plants bloomed – so I’m guessing bean pods aren’t too far behind!
I planted these from seed from my husband’s grandpa, so I’m awfully proud of them.
I planted some green and red leaf lettuce seeds a couple weeks back and it’s starting to come up!
My zucchini plant is outta control! I had no idea these grew to such big sizes. Note to self – give zucchini more room next year.
Peek under the big zucchini leaves and all kinds of goodness is happening underneath!
My basil has pretty much stayed the same size as nearly a month ago! I’m hoping the warmer weather gets the basil leaves growing because I want some fresh pesto. The purple carrots and spinach I planted a couple weeks are are also sprouting up. I really need to plant our pumpkin seeds – I’ve been behind the ball and hopefully will get to it this week!
If you’re just now joining my gardening journey, I’m learning as I go grow and sharing along the way:
- First I built the raised beds
- Then I added dirt
- Then I added plants
- and for fun, we created a DIY Worm Compost Bin
- and then Mavis came and gave me some advice – um, give your plants some room
- Our first harvest, lettuce rejoice and be glad
- June 23 – Saturday in the garden – built two more raised beds and harvested bok choy, cilantro, radishes
- June 30 – Saturday in the garden – Harvested green lettuce, swiss chard and bok choy, more greens pop up!
The garden is part of our quest to be more self-sufficient this year. We also recently got chickens! See our chicken journey here.
How’s your garden doing?

It looks amazing! I’m so very happy for you. It has really made a difference in how many trips I make out to the grocery store. I barely go now. Between the stockpile and the garden, I’m pretty set. If those zucchinis start getting too crazy remember you can trellis them so they grow up instead of taking over your bed. Same with cucumbers and any other squash.
