It’s no secret that I love road trips and weekend getaways. One of my favorite places is the Skamania Lodge, nestled on the Columbia River, in Stevenson, Washington. It’s the perfect place for a romantic getaway or for a family-friendly vacation. This last weekend we packed up the kids and car and headed south for a weekend of family fun!
Let me just start by saying the drive into Stevenson, Washington could not get more beautiful. Winding along the Columbia Gorge you can catch some breathtaking views!
As soon as we got to the Bridge of the Gods ($1 toll) – we cut across to the Oregon side and stopped at the Bonneville Fish Hatchery. This place is FREE and full of learning opportunities – our kids loved it! They got to see rainbow trout and sturgeon. For a quarter you can get a handful of fish food and feed the fish – which the kids enjoyed.
They have a small Visitor’s Center that has some awesome educational exhibits and you can take a sneak peek at the behind-the-scene hatchery areas.
And an underwater viewing area for the sturgeon pond, which was very impressive. Again a BIG hit with the kids.
The Bonneville Fish Hatchery has 40 different species of birds on the property! We saw some Oregon ducks.
So next time you’re along the Columbia Gorge, I recommend stopping by the Bonneville Fish Hatchery. The price is right – FREE and we really enjoyed ourselves. I think it would be fun to go in September when the salmon start arriving!
After the fish hatchery we headed back over to the Washington side of the Gorge checked in at the hotel! The lobby is gorgeous. It has beautiful views of the river, live piano music (the weekend we were there), cozy chairs, a rustic fire (with real logs, not one of those cheesy gas fireplaces) and endless free coffee. If you go kid-free it would be the perfect place to crawl up with a book and a glass of wine.
The rooms are all very nice with a Pacific Northwest lodge feel. The beds are cozy and the rooms are spacious!
As soon was we dropped our luggage in our room, we went on a scavenger hunt and hike. We found a sheet in the lobby with a list of things to look for. There are a ton of hiking trails around the hotel. We went on a short hike that wasn’t strenuous (since we had the kiddos) and we had so much fun looking for things on our list. Look mom. . .found some moss!
We really had fun and found all sorts of beautiful things – my favorite was the heart-shaped stump wrapped in moss.
And my son loved all his treasures and he carried them with him all weekend – as a reminder of our little hike. This was another FREE activity that we could do with the kids. There are a ton of things to do around the Gorge, check out the interactive map on the Skamania Lodge website.
We ate an early dinner in the restaurant and they have a great kids menu. Then we took the kids to the pool – which my kids LOVE! They have a great pool area with two hot tubs. One hot tub is inside the other is a rock lined hot tub outside. They have lots of floatation devices for the kids, which a lot of hotels don’t seem to have. By eating early and going to the pool during dinner time we were able to have the entire thing to ourselves! They have some great lounge chairs if you want to just sit back and relax, plus a wonderful spa area.
Next time we go, we hope to do the Beacon Rock hike which was closed while we were there. And I recommend also visiting Multnomah Falls which is right across the river! You can see a list of other activities here.
And on Sunday we crossed over and went into Portland to take a trip to the Oregon Zoo because we heard they were having a FREE admission day – so we saved $30+ by going on free day. We had a ton of FUN, even though it was very busy.
We had a wonderful weekend getaway. If you’re thinking about getting away – I think Skamania Lodge is a great destination for both a romantic weekend or a family getaway. It’s especially nice if you prefer to get outside and enjoy the free outdoor activities in the area.
