Cook quinoa in the rice cooker (shhh, don’t tell the rice)

I hope the rice in my pantry doesn’t know that I’m seeing someone else. I tried to be sneaky, but I think they have an idea – their neighbor, the quinoa container is empty and the rice cooker is suspiciously absent from the adjacent shelf. That’s right. I’m guilty. I put the quinoa in the rice cooker this morning. The encounter was short, steamy and in my humble opinion – a match made in heaven.

Here’s what I did. . . 

1.) Rinse quinoa in a fine-mesh strainer. Some varieties you don’t have to rinse. But the way I figure – it can’t hurt to give the quinoa a nice bath before you eat it.

2.) Toss 1 cup quinoa into rice cooker (I have a basic Aroma rice cooker from Costco, see rice cookers on sale at Amazon)

3.) Pour 2 cups water into rice cooker

4.) Start rice cooker. I used the “white rice setting” and it appears to have worked!

5.) When rice cooker dings – you’re done!

Depending on your rice cooker – you might need more water. You can start with a 1:2 ratio. If it’s too dry – add 1/4 cup more water the next time. Troubleshoot by adding 1/4 cup at a time until you find the right setting for you. If you prefer you can substitute chicken broth (or vegetable broth) for the water to give the quinoa a richer flavor.

Where to buy quinoa
I recommend buying it in bulk at Winco or Costco (Sam’s club).

I know this post is years Ola dn maybe not even monitored anymore; but I had been searching for the “how to quinoa in a rice cooker” and none f the dozens of articles and YouTubes clarified brown, white, porridge, steam, etc. Thank you for clarifying the type of rice setting.   2. I cook artichokes in the rice cooker. I cut off the stems and the point and put them in there on top of the steamer base with about 1.5 inches of water. I pack in up to 3 artichokes depending on their size. Cooks them beautifully in about 20 minutes.

  4. The white quinoa is OK, but I REALLY like red quinoa’s flavor!

    • That’s good to know! I have a bag in the pantry I have been meaning to try. What flavors does it compliment? Is it like white quinoa in that it takes on pretty much any flavor well?

  5. We do steel cut oats, and rolled oats in the rice cooker. YUM!!

    • You didn’t eat the Quinoa for breakfast? Serve it as a hot cereal, adding the sweetener and goodies of your choice. I like bits of apple, raisins, cinnamon, maple syrup and a little milk. I’ll also add a little ground flax to it. Quinoa is high in protien so it’s a great breakfast cereal.

  6. oh and some rice cookers come with steaming racks so you can steam vegetables and dimsum too!

  7. Not many people have slow cookers or pressure cookers back in the Philippines, I used to (while I was still there) tenderize tough meats (beef with tendons for soup) in the rice cooker overnight. 🙂

  8. Beans…any kind…I use my rice cooker more than my crock pot!
