If a coupon expires 7/31/11, can you use it on 7/31/11? Yes, you can use a coupon up through midnight of the expiration date on the coupon. So if a coupon says Expires 7/31/11 you can use your coupon on 7/31, but you would not be able to use it on 8/1/11.
Do not try and use an expired coupon – the store will likely not be reimbursed for it.
In honor of August being the back-to-school month, I’ll be posting a different coupon question/tutorial everyday for the month of August! Some of the posts will be really basic Coupon 101, but others will be more in depth. If you have a question you’d like me to cover, please leave a comment on this post or e-mail me!
See my other recent posts as part of this series:
August 1 – 10 for $10 – Do you have to buy 10 items to get the sale price?
August 2 – Can you use an e-coupon and a paper coupon on the same item?
August 3 – Don’t get duped by the photo on the coupon
August 4 – How many stores should you shop at each week?

I consider a coupon to be valid through the end of the business day at the point of sale on the date it expires. But my retailer refused it, telling me it was expired. That’s nonsense. The language on the coupon should say “Expired December 31, 2017” not “Expires ….” Expiration date should be at the point of sale, and not at the redemption deadline. The store should be able to redeem it on the manufacturer’s next business day.

Thank you for your help. I’ve always wondered about coupon expiration dates.

I remember back in the day when the coupons had no expiration date. Then they moved to exp dates but they would expire on the last day of that month. Sure made it easier to weed out the oldies.
