When school starts in a couple weeks we’ll be going through sandwiches like crazy, so I stopped into the Franz Outlet store today and stocked up on bread. Right now is the time to go – before every scrambles last minute and the store is empty. I ended up paying $16.50 for 13 items – or just $1.27 each. Some of these were organic breads that would have easily cost $3-4 in the grocery store.
If you’ve never shopped a bread outlet store, you really should check them out. They basically have bread (and lots of other products) that are close to theย best buy date – so they want to move it quickly. The closer it is to it’s best buy date, the cheaper it is (as low as 6/$7). I tend to pay a little bit more and get a little later date. Although I freeze everything as soon as I get home, I still figure it takes us 3-5 days to go through a loaf of bread, so I like to have a few extra days (some of you probably go through a loaf every day or so!). I’ve never had a problem with moldy or foul bread – just freeze it as soon as you get home. Take a loaf out the night before you need it and there you go!
Today I bought nine (9) items at a price of 3/$5.50 and then my local store gives you FREE items with purchase. So I was able to snag up four FREE items. My best buy dates range from August 20 (today) through August 25.

I’d love to hear from you – do you shop a bread outlet store? What are your favorite sandwiches to make for back to school lunches?
When I have the extra time and energy I like to make Grandma’s homemade rolls.

I have been shopping at the Tacoma store on 112th street for 20 years. Over the years I have never had bad bread, having said that yes it is not just baked fresh. The are many other product namely sour dough , French bread, rolls hamburger and hot dog buns, gravy mixes stuffing mix ( which is way over priced in the grocery store) snacks . If you use your bread for say French toast, bread pudding or your own stuffing mix or bread crumbs these breads are wonderful for those

as someone else said, bread molds very quickly in our house. also, i’m so picky I hate the taste of frozen or fridge bread. I keep my daughters gluten free bread and bagels in freezer. and I will free hamburger buns. That Franz Milk and Honey bread is the best bread by far on the market and makes the most amazing BLT’s!

We always buy at the bread store. We started a couple years ago and the first time my husband came with me he was so excited to see what amazing deals we get! We go to the Franz Bakery Outlet as well and we always buy from the buy 5 for $6 rack. We also look at there $1 shelf. We always come away with enough bagels, English muffins and breads for the month for about $13. And our store does the free items as well. I can’t buy regular priced bread anymore now that we can get the good stuff for so cheap. All of it goes into the freezer and freezes beautifully until we need it!

We don’t shop at bread outlets yet (just husband, baby, and me), but bread seems to mold quickly in our kitchen. Thus, I keep all our bread in the freezer and just take out slices as needed. It goes straight into the toaster for toast and we pull out a two slices and make a sandwich on the frozen bread for the next day–it’s thawed by lunchtime.

Ok, silly question – is there an Olympia location? I could have sworn it closed…

There is a Lacey location. There was an Oroweat outlet that closed – but Franz Outlet in Lacey is still going strong! http://franzbakery.com/about-franz/locations/28/washington#frans_locations-13

Do you freeze it in the same bag you buy it in, or do you stick it in a freezer bag? I was at Winco earlier and opted to make homemade bread rather than buying it, but for just over a dollar a loaf for good bread, I may head to Franz in the next couple days! Thanks for the reminder! ๐

I just throw it into the freezer in the bag it’s in. Franz usually has a plastic wrapper inside the plastic bag. I’ve never had an issue before with it tasting freezer burned. Hope this helps!
