The deals are HOT this week at Safeway. I just got back and I spent $24.38 on everything pictured above and I got $12.50 worth of catalinas (or coupons) to use off my future shopping trips at Safeway!
Here’s what I purchased in one transaction:
14 Quaker Oatmeal Squares – @ $1.49 = $20.86
6 Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks – @ $0.99 = $5.96
I bought them in these increments because they were part of the buy four, save four promotion. It’s mix and match – so I had a total of 20 items (5 groups of 4) to get the $4 off promotion on all of them.
Used 14 $1/1 Quaker coupons from 1/30 Red Plum insert
Used 3 $0.50/2 fruit snack coupons from 2/13 General Mills insert
4 Quaker oatmeals using the $1.77 Safeway in-ad coupon
Plus used four (4) $1/1 Quaker oatmeal coupon from 1/2 Red Plum
6 California Kitchen pizzas, personal size – @ 2.50 each = $15
Used in-ad coupon for $5 off $15 frozen food purchase
(The $1 California Kitchen coupon in the Safeway Frozen Food Coupon Book is for the bigger sizes, so I didn’t use any coupons. Some regions received $1/1 coupons, we did not.)
I paid $24.90 out of pocket
I received these catalinas:
A catalina is a coupon that prints at the register on receipt-type paper. It is almost always triggered by something you purchase. It can be for a dollar amount of your purchase, like the ones I received tonight, or they can be for a specific product, for example, $1.50 off Tide.
$3 off my next order (from purchasing four oatmeals)
$2 off my next order (from purchasing fruit snacks)
$1.25 off my order (from California pizza)
$1.25 off my order (from California pizza)
$1.25 off my order (from California pizza)
$1.25 off my order (from California pizza)
$1.25 off my order (from California pizza)
$1.25 off my order (from California pizza)
TOTAL catalinas received = $12.50
I’m guessing all of these catalinas can be used to purchase more of the same items, but I haven’t tried it. For more specific details on the catalinas – check my Safeway match-ups!
Now you might be wondering why I have 14 boxes of cereal – this is my son’s FAVORITE cereal. He thinks the oatmeal squares are cookies – and I’m not going to tell him any differently. That’s why I happen to have 14 of the coupons on hand – when they came out in the paper, I knew it was a product we used and I knew the coupon would get me a good deal, eventually – so I stocked up on coupons. I bought extra papers and traded with a friend to get extras. And these coupons came out back in January – so I’ve held on to them for more than a month – which just goes to show that you have to be patient and wait for the right time to use your coupons. Sometimes it’s a gamble waiting for a sale, sometimes it pays off and sometimes you wish you would have used them. I even went back and forth about $0.49 cents – should I wait in hopes that they go on sale for $1 somewhere and maybe get them FREE? I have more on hand if that happens.

I bought 8 boxes of cereal and had 2 $1.50 off when you buy 3 mnfctr coupons that applied, plus got a $2 off catalina coupon WHICH I realized are also mnfctr coupons not store coupons like I thought (thanks to that persuasive ‘redeem at…’ suggestion) I took it right over to Albertson’s across the street where I was snagging more deals and saved $2. Ithink that made the ceareal 87 cents a box, Love it!
