Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy. Published Monday through Friday – as I’m able.
Good morning! Well friends, the time is near! We are waiting for a phone call today to head down and sign the final papers on our house sale. They should record with the county tomorrow. We plan to hit the road tomorrow morning and our first destination is Lake Wenatchee State Park! I can’t believe this is happening, seems like just yesterday that we started this process and now we’re on the eve of our adventure. If you have tips or suggestions for Lake Wenatchee or Leavenworth (we plan to spend a day there) – please leave a comment and let us know! I’m hoping if you have visited an area before – that you’ll chime in and give us your tips for favorite restaurants or attractions.
If you want to follow our travels specifically . . .
- SUBSCRIBE to the Take That Exit email newsletter – Probably the best way to get updates, since Facebook isn’t so great about sharing updates of your favorite pages these days. The email updates only go out when we have a new post – which likely won’t be more than once a day or 3-5 days a week.
- Take that Exit also has these social media spots – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram
But if you could care less about the crazy travel stuff – don’t you worry, I’ll still be delivering the best deals here on Queen Bee. My physical location could be anywhere – but you can always FIND ME here. 🙂 Rise and Shine might be tricky when I’m in places without cell reception or wifi. On days that I can’t personally write Rise and Shine in the morning – we’ll still publish the deals but it won’t have my ramblings at the beginning. It will always be my authentic voice you’re hearing here in the intro, or else it will say that I’m disconnected for the day. The Rise and Shine deals will be be published daily Monday through Friday regardless and you can subscribe to get Rise & Shine delivered via email here.
How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun? Leave a comment and let me know!

Hi Heather,
I lived in Wenatchee for over 20 yeasts and hope to move back there one day. I go there at least once a month to visit my kids.
Love the area.
Right outside Leavenworth heading towards Cashmere there is a place right off the highway called Smallwood Harvest. They have a small petting zoo, sell fresh fruit, antiques, oh and wine, they also have cute little trinkets and just a fun place to let the kids play and adults relax.
At Aplets & Cotlers in cashmere, you can take the candy tour and see how the candy is made. Don’t forget to go to the Hat Shoppe in Leavenworth, every hat you can imagine.
This is such an exciting adventure for you and your family! I’m impressed with your ability and courage to do this. Enjoy your new adventures and I look forward to reading about your travels.
Enjoy!

The park behind downtown Leavenworth is beautiful and has a very nice walking trail which runs along the river. One place we never miss when we are in the area is the barbecue place in Cashmere, which is between Leavenworth and Wenatchee. I can’t remember the name but it is fantastic and has outdoor seating – It’s downtown not far from Applets & Cotlets.
I’m so excited to read about your travels!

Make sure to visit Ohlme, not sure on the spelling, Gardens state park one the ridge above Wenatchee. It is an alpine garden that is absolutely beautiful. Waterfalls, hidden garden pools, beautiful paths that your kids will love to explore.

Hi Heather. I have also been a long time follower of your blog. I think what you are doing with your family is amazing.
I live in Grand Coulee, WA and haven’t had the chance to visit the Lake Wenatchee State Park. I should though, it is less than a 2 hour drive from here! I have visited Leavenworth a few times though and my mom takes a trip there every year.
My daughter’s favorite thing to do in Leavenworth is go to the Nutcracker Museum (Nussknacker in German). It is an amazing collection of Nutcrackers, I am simply amazed by the extensive collection they have there. It seems every time we visit we see something new that we didn’t notice the previous time.
Like Karen said there is a lot of things to do around here. Sun Lakes is great and is right by Dry Falls State Park. It isn’t a camp site but learning about Dry Falls is amazing. At the time of the Missoula floods, the waterfall would have been bigger than Niagara Falls. From there it is just a short drive to Grand Coulee. Here there is Steamboat Rock State Park. You can hike up to the top of Steamboat Rock, and there is camping at that park. And a part of that state park across the street is Northrup Canyon. One of the most beautiful hiking trails I have ever been on. Last time we were on it we met people from Germany, Canada and Sweden! People from all over the world come here. It is an easy hike, but the views are amazing. The path is very well kept by the Park Service. Of course at the Grand Coulee Dam (the biggest Hydro Electric Dam in America) there are tours where you can now tour the top of the dam, and an awesome light show every night.
I wish you the best in your travels around the country!
Jennifer Nielsen says
Oh, and before you hit Sun Lakes, make sure you pack up on Groceries. The closest town is Coulee City (12 miles), and they are quite lacking in grocery items. I think they have a small food center now, called Coulee City Food Center, but it is definitely a small town grocery store.
Heather Clarke says
THANK you for this tip! We’ll need to get groceries after Wenatchee for sure. Good to know that there isn’t much close.
Heather Clarke says
Hi Jennifer! Thank you so much for the tips on Leavenworth and Sun Lakes! I can’t wait to check out Dry Falls Sate Park! Thanks for the tip on the easy hike – we’ll need to ease the kids into easy hikes and all the better if they have good views!
Jennifer Nielsen says
And while you are at the Dry Falls Visitor Center, make sure you inquire about the “Blue Lake Rhino”. Back in the 30’s some hikers discovered the remains of a small rhino in a rock a few miles south of Dry Falls. It really is an amazing discovery. I wouldn’t suggest the hike up to the site with small kids, but they have information on the discovery there.

Hi Heather. My name is Karen and I have been a longtime follower of your blog. Thanks for all you do! I am so happy for you and your family in taking this adventure. Lake Wenatchee is beautiful, we used to camp there when I was a kid. Leavenworth is a lot of fun. There is a gelato shop at the beginning of town that is amazing and there is a cheesemonger that gives free samples. I can’t remember the name, but there is a funky toy shop in town that also sells taffy (tons of flavors). Another awesome campground is Sun Lakes which is further East of Wenatchee, near Grand Coulee. Lots of sun and you can rent paddleboats. Coulee Dam does a light show at night which is pretty cool too. Anyway, may you have an amazing year on the road with your family.
Heather Clarke says
Hi Karen! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment – it means so much to me!
Thanks for the tips for Leavenworth – gelato and cheese – you’re talking our language. 🙂 Plus I love funky toy shops – always fun to browse in those, too. I’m so excited that you recommend Sun Lakes – because guess what!?! That’s stop #2 for us! We’ll be there a few days after Lake Wenatchee. We picked it because of it’s location to the Coulee Dam and hope to do the light show! Sounds like that was a good plan.
I’m so grateful that you’ve been a longtime follower of my site. I hope you’ll continue to follow as we travel – I’d love to have you along for the ride!
Heather
