Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy.
Good morning! How’s it going this morning? I’m glad it’s Friday. We all seem to be fighting a bit of a head cold around here. So I’m looking forward to a weekend of coupon clipping and getting somethings accomplished around the house.
Yesterday I ordered a set of grow lights and a heat mat for my seeds – so I’m continuing to make progress on getting my garden up and running earlier this year! I’m hoping by next week I should have some seeds in the dirt! I ordered this Hydrofarm JSV4 4-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System and this Hydrofarm CK64050 Germination Station with Heat Mat. Although the initial investment is high, I’m sure we’ll get many years out of these items – and because we invested in raised beds in previous years – it sort of spreads out the costs. I think gardening is something that slowly grows each year – just like you might make improvements on your house a little at a time. At any rate, I’m super thrilled to get that set up next week. My friend Erika over at Edible NW has some great tutorials for setting up seed growing system in your garage! You can tour her indoor growing area here. I didn’t follow her style this year – I don’t have a lot of extra space in my garage – just a counter essentially, so this is my baby step in that direction. Do you grow seeds indoors? What type of set up or lights do you use?
Did you see the news that Albertsons’ parent company wants to purchase Safeway? I’m really intrigued and it should be interesting to see what might change with Safeway if this does go through by the end of the year. Learn more about Albertsons buying Safeway here.

I just started seeds. The cabbage, lettuce, and spinach are up. Put them in a seed trap on the refridgerator. 3 days later, they’re up. Now they’ll go under a fluro fixture for a week or do

My mom starts seeds every year without any fancy equipment; the heat pad can dry out the soil and the plants overgrow the light too fast. We have shelving unit in front of the big window that provides plenty of light and space. Latter we will replant and move pots in our indoor pool that has windows on three sides. It’s like a “green house ” in spring time. We have pepper starts already, cucs, flowers 🙂

Where does your mom live? The sunlight here in Olympia, Washington isn’t strong enough or regular enough to give plants a good healthy start without any supplement. We don’t have an indoor pool for a humid area – either. 🙂 The best I have is a shower. We have super moist air here (rain, rain, rain) – so I’m not too concerned about the heat mat drying out my plants. Although as I’ve said many times before, I’m no expert, just learning as I “grow”

We are in Tri-Cities, WA, so plenty of sunshine and dry. Her plant starts are growing great, but she has to rotate them in front of the window to keep them growing straight.
