Rise and Shine is my way of sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you! We talk about the new deals of the day, highlights from yesterday, and anything else that might help us save time, money or energy. Published Monday through Friday – as I’m able.
Good morning! It’s FRIDAY! I’m so stinking happy about this. It’s been A week. Seriously.
Yesterday the kids and I had an appointment in Seattle in the morning, so after finishing up Rise and Shine (sorry about all those typos yesterday, apparently I was a little distracted!) we rushed up to the big city. After our appointment we continued to head north to the Alderwood Mall to hit up the American Girl store and the LEGO store.
My kids have been so amazing about downsizing toys – no complaining – they have been 100% on board with the process and our next chapter. In the last five months we’ve sold and donated so many toys and it has been amazingly freeing for us all. Our kids are playing outside more than ever, reading more, playing in their rooms longer without the overwhelming piles of stuff, and clean-up is no longer a battle – it all goes into a few bins. It’s has been a good choice for our family to simplify in the toy department. BUT – with that said – I promised them that they could use some of the funds from their toy sales to buy one or two SPECIAL toys. My daughter has been asking for an American Girl doll for the last year – and she finally got one yesterday! My son opted for a couple LEGO sets and Nintendo DS games he’s been wanting. We went from having piles of toys we half-cared-about to fewer toys that we love – that can be played with in many capacities. I can honestly say – we are all happier. The kids and I had a FUN-filled day together – even despite Seattle traffic. 🙂
Now I need tips and ideas for how to save on American Girl (or 18-inch doll) clothing. The store was amazing, the customer service over-the-top, but the prices – oh my goodness, I think I was a little shocked. For example, a jacket for Grace (the doll my daughter picked out) was $38! We picked up a few accessories (not the jacket!), but I’m hoping we can find other ways to save on 18-inch doll accessories – they don’t have to be the American Girl brand. Share your ideas on this post!
Do you have any plans this weekend? We have a couple kid’s birthday parties and a family barbecue. Good stuff. And tonight – I have a HOT date with my husband packing and sorting stuff in preparation for the move.
We’ll also be celebrating Memorial Day this weekend – so grateful for all of our military service personnel and their families. We have so many of you in the Queen Bee Community and I’m so grateful for you. Hugs to you if you’re missing a military family member this weekend and/or mourning someone who has given the ultimate sacrifice for our country through service.

Hi Heather – I have been following your downsizing posts and have been wondering if you had any tips or a process that you went through with your kids to help make decisions when downsizing the toys.
Helen in Meridian says
I love American Girl dolls and have collected since their 2nd year in business. Have never been near an AG Store. Before the stores, the onlyh place besides catalog was the once a year sale where they donate returns and excess etc. for a warehouse benefit sale for the Children’s Museum in Madison. I have always wanted to go. They don’t recommend the 18″ dolls for children younger than 7 or 8. Bitty is for them, so she may not take good enough care of her. At this time, I would look for the sales at Kohls, Sears, Dillards and who sell Dolly and Me clothes. These have both the girl and doll matching outfits. The 18″ dolls at Walmart are made by Madame Alexander. JoAnn and Hobby Lobby have their patterns on sale about once a month and when they do Simplicity they are .99 or $1, McCalls Buttericks are $1.99. Simplicity has 15 or so patterns designed to fir 18″ DOLLS. They have lovely outfits from Frozen, all Disney Princesses and dolly and me outfits. The fat quarter quilt prints that are scaled for small quilting and in rolls or 3 or 5 patterns that “match” would be a good way to start sewing some things. I hope you sew, these dolls are ideal to sew for…versus Barbie size.
Rebeka says
I was at Costco today and saw that they have a few book for American Girl, one about hair with a hair brush and a few tips to do there hair. They had a few other books as well, with accessories.
Rachel Henderson says
Heather, if you enjoy sewing, pixiefaire.com has several free patterns for 18 inch doll clothes, and they have Freebie fridays and give a pattern away every Friday. Also, the patterns that aren’t free are only a few dollars, and with scraps of fabric on hand, you can sew your own clothes for next to nothing!
susan says
I look at Zuliy often and they have been carrying clothes for 18 inch dolls.
susan says
Hi,
I look at Zuliy often and they offer clothes for 18 inch dolls.
Stacy says
For American girl doll clothes the Carters preemie size fits perfect! You can find them crazy cheap at Fred Meyers.
Jayme McBride says
Micheals carries 18″ doll clothes and accessories. You can use your 40% coupons on. They have a pretty good selection.
randi says
My girls never owned an American Girl Doll, but my niece did. Her mom used ebay and craigs list to stock up on cute outfits.
I have seen many inexpensive outfits at local craft fairs, particularly those around the holiday season.
Emma B says
I agree with the other comments, Target is a great way to go for outfits and other accessories. also watch for sales, I know my mom just picked up some stuff for great prices at american girl that were on sale.
Shannon says
We have always had great luck with the Our Generation at Target. I think the quality is good, they typically always come with great accessories and shoes and often go on sale. They currently have several sets on sale for around $10-$12 plus they are having a B1 get one 40% off…good luck!
Heather Clarke says
Good morning, Shannon! Thanks for sharing the Our Generation tip! We’ll have to check out Target for sets. $10 – $12 is much more manageable than $24 – $40! Thanks for the tip on the sale, too!
Hanna says
My girls have american Girl dolls, but buy generic accessories too. We have found a lot of things on ebay and amazon and even some used items at yard sales, etc. We like the $2 shoes at Walmart and I found some clothes for them after Christmas for half price. I’ve heard people use the 40 or 60% off coupons at Joann ‘ s for outfits too.
I love that you downsized on toys. We did the same thing and I especially like the “less clean up” part! Other kids get bored by our lack of toys, but mine do okay and are playing outside more for sure! They especially love their AG dolls!
Heather Clarke says
Oooh great tips, I love it. I didn’t realize Walmart had $2 shoes and that JoAnn’s carried 18-inch doll accessories – good to know! Do you know if Michael’s carries 18-inch doll accessories?
sue says
Yes, Michael’s carry 18″ doll accessories …. I sew 18′ doll clothes all the time for my GDs and buy the shoes, hats , etc. on Amazon (we have student prime so no shipping) ….I watch for the prices to go down b/f buying them….Also, Homegoods sometimes had furniture and accessories ..I bought 2 AG puppies last Christmas. You’d be surprised ho many stores carry them now.
